Help Me Choose!

Windows or Linux? Which hosting platform suits me? You have to decide on this before you select the hosting plans. One of the common misconceptions is to run Linux/Unix operating system on Home or Office computer if a site is hosted on Linux server. This is not true. The Server Operating System on which the sites are hosted is independent of your computer's operating system.

The websites can be broadly classified into 2 types into Static websites and Dynamic websites. The static websites are built using HTML/XHML, CSS, etc. WITHOUT databases and server side scripts like ASP, PHP, etc. The static sites can be hosted on either a Windows server or Linux server.

The dynamic websites with databases like MS Access, MS SQL Server, MySQL and Server side scripts like ASP, ASP.NET, PHP, etc. require you to decide which hosting platform to choose. It is better to choose Windows servers if your scripts utilize Microsoft Technologies. Even though Windows servers support PHP, MySQL, the Linux servers are better for PHP and MySQL. The Web Developers have better knowledge on choosing the servers for dynamic websites.

Which Server Platform is Better? Many argue that Linux or Unix servers provide greater stability and security than other Operating Systems. However, in this competitive world the stability and security of a server is more dependant on the server administrator than the platform. Our Windows and Linux servers are maintained effectively by our Administrators to deliver overall high performance.

Those little facts might have helped you to decide which hosting platform to choose.

Decide on your website requirement as static or dynamic site, estimate the memory size it consumes, estimate bandwidth required, estimate amount of space required for your email, estimate number of Email IDs required, available budget and look for necessary features to select your plan on Windows or Linux Server.
